TAO - CULTURE SOUVENIR STUDIO

Brand identity with purchase website for a souvenir studio that inspired from culture

Brief

Tạo is a souvenir shop selling souvenirs inspired by traditional local art forms. Tạo needed an eye-catching, modern brand identity that also incorporated traditional elements to appeal to two main customer groups: tourists interested in learning about local culture and young, dynamic, modern locals who lacked connection to the local culture.

Solution

Tao has founders and its first store in Da Nang city. This city is famous for Hoi An Ancient Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site. Therefore, I thoroughly researched the cultural aspects of this ancient town, combining them with bright, bold graphics and colors. From this, I wanted to create a store that is eye-catching and modern, yet still retains the interesting elements of local culture.

In this project, I developed the mascot, font set, website, and merchandise.

Tạo's exclusive typeface is inspired by the neatly layered rows of traditional roof tiles. The font used is custom-designed by our team for Tạo, fueled by a passionate love for the simple and rustic beauty of our homeland

The decorative patterns on Tạo's shirt are also modeled after the lotus flower motifs on the door-eyes.

The head of the statue of Baby Tạo is inspired by the petal-bordered window frames – a cultural and architectural feature unique to Hoi An.

Baby Tạo's face and chubby appearance are inspired by the drawing and depiction of babies in the folk painting "Vinh Hoa".
